The expat gym decision is a contract decision
Visitors buy day passes. Nomads buy months. Expats buy years, and years are where the money and the regret live. Twelve months at a month-to-month rate in Da Nang costs roughly double what the same twelve months costs on a term, so the discount is real and worth chasing. The catch is that the term is only a bargain if you actually complete it, and the single most reliable thing about expat life in Vietnam is that plans change.
That produces three questions that matter far more to you than equipment lists or floor area, and that almost nobody publishes answers to:
- What is the all-in cost for a year, not the headline monthly price? Monthly rates are quoted at term pricing, which is not what you pay if you leave early.
- What happens when you leave the country for a month? Visa runs, a trip home, a work stint elsewhere. Most memberships here run down regardless.
- Will you still go in July? Da Nang holds 33 to 34.5°C with 79 to 89% humidity through the hot season. Nobody quits a hot gym dramatically, they just stop going in summer and keep paying.
Annual cost of ownership, eight Da Nang gyms
This is the table we could not find anywhere else, so we built it. It is the cost of a full year, not a month, alongside what you are actually locked into. Air conditioning is graded the same way as in our verified AC guide: verified where the gym states it and independent guides agree, reported where guides list it but coverage of the whole floor is unconfirmed, disputed where sources contradict each other.

Evolve's figures are our own and current. Everything else comes from the gyms' published rates and from Da Nang gym guides, checked 11 August 2026, and several are approximations built from a monthly rate rather than a published annual price. CrossFit Lotus lists in US dollars, so we have left it in dollars rather than applying an exchange rate that will be wrong by the time you read this. Vietnamese gym pricing moves, and some gyms quote foreigners differently, so confirm at the desk before paying for a year.
Two things stand out. First, the cheapest published year in this table is not the cheapest gym to train in: No Limits at 8,600,000₫ is genuinely the lowest annual figure among the better-known gyms, but its air conditioning is disputed and it closes at 8:30 PM, which is a real constraint if you work. Second, the spread between the cheapest and most expensive air-conditioned year is about three times, which is a smaller gap than most people assume once you compare annual totals rather than headline monthly rates.
Contracts, lock-in and the thing nobody publishes
Ask any long-term foreign resident here about gym contracts and you get the same story: the term was cheap, then something changed. A three-week trip home. A visa run that turned into a month in Bangkok. A project that moved to Ho Chi Minh City for six weeks. The membership kept running.
Pause and freeze policies are standard in most Western gym markets and are close to absent from published Vietnamese rate cards. We could not find a single Da Nang gym other than Evolve that states a pause policy publicly, which does not mean none exist. It means you have to ask, and asking is worth doing before you hand over a year's money rather than after.
For context on where we sit: Evolve's 3 and 12-month terms both include one personal training strategy session per month, and the 12-month term can be paused for up to one month. If you take a full month away and pause, your 11,880,000₫ year works out at roughly 1,080,000₫ per month you actually train, which is still well under the rolling monthly rate of 1,990,000₫. If you are the kind of expat who leaves for two or three months at a time, no annual term in this city is the right product for you and you should be buying months.
Foreigner pricing, and how to handle it
Dual pricing is a real feature of the Da Nang gym market and it is reported often enough in published guides to be worth planning around rather than being surprised by. No Limits Fitness and Yoga has drawn specific reports of higher foreigner rates. It is not universal and it is not usually malicious, it is simply what happens when a gym has no printed rate card and prices are set at the desk.
The defences are unglamorous and effective:
- Ask by message, not in person. A written quote is harder to revise upward and gives you something to point at later.
- Ask for the price list, not a price. "Can you send your membership options?" produces different results from "how much for a year?"
- Bring a Vietnamese-speaking friend or colleague to a smaller gym if you are committing to a term there.
- Prefer gyms that publish rates. Newer and larger gyms tend to have a single public rate card, which removes the question entirely. This is one of the few genuine advantages of the more expensive tier.
Our own position, since we are one of the gyms you might be asking: Evolve's rates are published, identical for everyone, and listed on our memberships page.
Where you live decides more than which gym is better
This is the single most useful thing in this guide and the thing people ignore. Over a year you will make the trip to your gym somewhere between 150 and 300 times. A fifteen-minute ride each way in 34°C heat and rainy-season downpours costs you more sessions than a slightly worse squat rack ever will.
| If you live in | Realistic options | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| An Thượng the 6 to 8 block expat core west of Mỹ Khê |
TamTayGym (in the block), Evolve and Mobifit360 (short ride south), CrossFit Lotus (short ride south), My An Sport, Star Gym | Most choice in the city, and the highest rents in the city. Nothing here forces a commute. |
| Khuê Mỹ / Bắc Mỹ An / southern Mỹ Khê | Evolve, Mobifit360, CrossFit Lotus, Naomi, United Fitness, 38 Gym | Three of the four late-opening or 24/7 options in Da Nang sit within a few hundred metres of each other on Hồ Xuân Hương. |
| Sơn Trà north Phước Mỹ, An Hải |
Vinabeast, No Limits Fitness & Yoga, Tâm Body, TV Fitness, Học Viện Fitness 199 | Vinabeast is the only verified AC option up here, and it is the most expensive per month on this page. |
| Hải Châu the city centre, across the river |
Elite Fitness, California Fitness & Yoga, The New Gym, HD Fitness, Black's Gym, Kiến Gym, HL Fitness | The full-facility chains with pools and saunas live here. The beach-district gyms are a bridge crossing away, which in practice means you will not go. |
| Ngũ Hành Sơn south towards FPT and Hoà Hải |
Dino Fitness & Yoga (FPT Plaza), United Fitness, plus a ride north to the Hồ Xuân Hương cluster | Thin on options. This is the district where a cheap local gym plus occasional day passes elsewhere genuinely makes sense. |
Locations from the gyms' published addresses and Da Nang gym guides, checked 11 August 2026. Areas overlap and boundaries are informal, so treat this as a shortlist by neighbourhood rather than a precise map.
Community, and being honest about which gyms have it
Most people who move here underestimate how much of the loneliness problem a gym can solve, and then choose a gym that cannot solve it at all.
CrossFit Lotus is the consistent top recommendation among Da Nang expats for exactly this reason, and it is not close. Class formats put you in a room with the same people at the same hour every week, coached in English, with weekly coffee meetups and monthly challenges layered on top. Members describe it as the thing that turned Da Nang from a place they were staying into a place they lived. It sits at 111 Hồ Xuân Hương, on the same street as Evolve and Mobifit360, and its recovery side (sauna, cold and compression therapy, sports massage) is a genuine differentiator up here.
The trade-off is honest too. Reported hours are roughly 5:45 AM to 8 PM on weekday mornings and evenings, closing at 6 PM on Friday and 4 PM at weekends, and it is a class-led box rather than an open weight room, so if you follow your own programme on your own schedule it is the wrong shape. It is also listed in US dollars at $140 a month, which is at the top of the Da Nang market.
Conventional gyms, ours included, are much weaker at this. Everyone arrives at a different hour, puts headphones in, and leaves. If a social circle is your main goal, pick the class format over the better weight room and accept the compromise.
The language barrier at smaller gyms
At the budget tier you should assume no English and plan accordingly, and that is completely workable. What you need for a gym transaction is a small vocabulary and a translation app, and it takes about ten minutes to prepare:
- Have the monthly, three-month and annual price written out in Vietnamese on your phone before you arrive, with the numbers in figures. Vietnamese prices are usually spoken in thousands, so "một trăm năm mươi" means 150, meaning 150,000₫.
- Ask for the price in a message rather than at the desk. Translation works far better in text than out loud in a noisy room.
- Bring cash. Card acceptance is patchy below the premium tier, and bank transfer by QR code is more common than cards.
- Expect to hand over ID or a photo of it. This is normal here and not a warning sign.
- If you want coaching in English, you are effectively choosing between CrossFit Lotus, the international chains, Vinabeast (whose owner is English-speaking and hands-on) and gyms like ours that are set up for a foreign membership. Below that tier, coaching will be in Vietnamese.
Where Evolve fits, honestly
We run Evolve, so read this section with the scepticism it deserves and check the tables above against other sources.
Evolve is at 14 Hồ Xuân Hương, Khuê Mỹ, Ngũ Hành Sơn, minutes from Mỹ Khê Beach and walkable from parts of An Thượng. It opened in 2026 and runs daily from 8 AM to midnight on an enclosed, air-conditioned floor. It is built as a club for entrepreneurs, creators and ambitious people living in this city, which is a specific bet rather than a claim to be everything to everyone.
For a long-stay resident, the numbers that matter are these: 990,000₫ a month on a 12-month term (11,880,000₫ for the year, against 23,880,000₫ for twelve rolling monthly memberships), 1,490,000₫ a month on three months, one PT strategy session per month included on both terms, and the option to pause a 12-month membership for up to one month.
Choose Evolve if
- You are committing to a year and want the term to survive your travel. The one-month pause exists because expats leave.
- You train through the hot season. The floor is enclosed and air-conditioned, which is the difference between a habit and a summer gap.
- You work late or run your own thing. Open to midnight, when most of this city has been shut for three hours.
- You live in Khuê Mỹ, southern Mỹ Khê or An Thượng. No river crossing, no cross-city ride.
- You want a published rate card that does not change depending on who is asking.
Choose something else if
- Community is the point. CrossFit Lotus is better at this than we are, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
- You need 24-hour access. Mobifit360, a few doors down the same street, is open 24/7. We close at midnight.
- You want a pool, sauna and spa. Elite Fitness is built for that. So is CrossFit Lotus on the recovery side.
- You are optimising on price. A neighbourhood gym is 2,600,000₫ to 7,200,000₫ for the year. Nothing air-conditioned in Da Nang competes with that.
- You live in Hải Châu or north Sơn Trà. Over a year, the commute will beat the gym. Train near home.
A sane process for picking one
- Shortlist by district first, quality second. Draw a ten-minute radius around where you live and start there. Only leave the radius for something genuinely unavailable inside it.
- Buy day passes, not a term. Two or three at 100,000₫ to 200,000₫ each is cheap insurance against a bad year. Our first visit is free, which makes it cheaper still. See the day pass guide for what every gym charges.
- Visit between 4 PM and 7 PM in summer. Hottest ambient temperature, fullest floor. A quiet Tuesday morning tells you nothing about the gym you will actually train in.
- Ask the three contract questions in writing before you commit to any term.
- Start on one month, not twelve. Do a full month at your top pick, including at least one session you did not feel like doing. Then buy the year, at which point you are buying something you have tested rather than something you hope is right.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best gym in Da Nang for expats?
There is no single answer, because expats optimise for different things. CrossFit Lotus at 111 Hồ Xuân Hương is consistently the top pick for community and coaching, and it runs in English. Evolve at 14 Hồ Xuân Hương is strongest on annual cost per month (990,000₫ on a 12-month term), has a verified air-conditioned floor, opens until midnight, and lets you pause a 12-month membership for up to one month. Elite Fitness in Thanh Khê suits expats who want a pool and sauna and live in the city. If you live outside An Thượng, Khuê Mỹ or Sơn Trà, a fan-cooled neighbourhood gym at 220,000₫ to 600,000₫ a month that you can reach in five minutes will beat a better gym you have to commute to.
Can you pause or freeze a gym membership in Da Nang?
It is uncommon and almost never published. Most Da Nang gyms sell a fixed block of time that runs down whether you are in the country or not, which matters because expats here travel for visa runs, work and holidays. Evolve allows a 12-month membership to be paused for up to one month. Mobifit360 sells access in blocks of 2 to 48 weeks with a set number of visits per week, which sidesteps the problem differently. Everywhere else, ask before you sign and get the answer in writing.
Is a 12-month gym membership worth it in Da Nang?
If you are genuinely staying a year, the discount is large. At Evolve a 12-month term is 990,000₫ a month, or 11,880,000₫, against 23,880,000₫ for twelve consecutive one-month memberships. Almost exactly half price. The risk is not the money, it is the assumption. A 12-month term is only right if the gym will let you pause it, or if you would still call the year good value at eight months of use.
Do gyms in Da Nang charge foreigners more than locals?
It is reported often enough to plan around. Published guides note that some gyms quote higher rates to foreigners, and No Limits Fitness and Yoga in particular has attracted such reports. Ask for the price list rather than a price, ask over messaging so the quote is in writing, and prefer gyms that publish a single public rate card.
Which gym in Da Nang is best for meeting people as an expat?
CrossFit Lotus, plainly. Class-based training puts you with the same people at the same time each week, which is how friendships actually form, and it adds weekly coffee meetups and monthly challenges. Conventional gyms, ours included, are harder places to meet people because everyone arrives on their own schedule with headphones in. If a social circle is the main thing you want, choose a class format over a better weight room.
How much does a gym cost per year in Da Nang?
Roughly 2,600,000₫ to 7,200,000₫ a year for a fan-cooled neighbourhood gym, and roughly 8,600,000₫ to 24,000,000₫ a year for an air-conditioned one, depending heavily on whether you commit to a term. The lowest published annual figure among the better-known gyms is No Limits Fitness and Yoga at 8,600,000₫, though its AC is disputed and it closes at 8:30 PM. Evolve is 11,880,000₫ on a 12-month term with a verified air-conditioned floor.
Test the year before you buy the year
Your first visit is free, then day passes are 150,000₫. Come at 6 PM in August. If the floor is still cold when it is full, you have your answer.
